Why Health and Social Care as a Career?

health-and-social-care-assistantsDuring my tender age in life I aspired to be a Medical Doctor, I believed it is one of the ways I would be able to contribute to helping humanity. I discovered my interests lay in reading and music, these hobbies of mine exposed me to the emotional components of human beings, their needs and ways of solving problems as I read stories about people. My parents always told me that from my tender age I always displayed a caring nature, always interested in giving a helping hand around the home. My religion also formed a bedrock of strong believe that I was born to be a helping hand to people around me.   Some of the subjects I offered in my secondary school level made me believe I was capable of studying Human beings, like biology and Chemistry. When I completed my secondary school I realized my desires where modified I could itemize my strengths and weaknesses to a better degree. I decided I’ll rather follow the pathway of helping people solve social and psychological problems as well as physical care rather than medical problems. I believe this decision was also based on my assessment of my ability to study medicine which I found a little weak.  All through my relationship with my family and my friends, I have been able to understand people and respect their own opinions; I have also learnt to apply patience and wisdom when handling difficult situations. During my vacation periods from school I stayed with my grandparents, I discovered there way of thinking was quite different from mine I would call it generational difference and so I learnt to understand the elderly and their needs as well. As an African, our culture also demands that you take care of the elderly so that they can bless you and it will be well with you. I furthered my education in Child Development and Family counseling because I wanted to be a good model of a family and be able to help families likewise. When I started to look for a job I discovered there were a lot of job opportunities to work with adults as well which seemed like what I always wanted to do – help people around me both as a life style and a career. My first job as a care assistant exposed me to the diverse needs of people spread over different groups and I realized there is a career pathway in this profession of caring. My interest in care work grew with experience and more knowledge that I gained from my colleagues, supervisors, managers and the individuals I worked with and consistency within the work practice. I gladly embraced this noble career and that’s why I work in the Health and Social care industry today. So dear reader you can write your own account emphasizing the principles underpinning your personal and professional development and your approach to learning and how you have transferred your past experience to your career as a care worker. You will discover that your account will provide good coverage for your HSC23 and HSC33 or what do you think?
